“THIS ELECTION, THE AFL-CIO IS RUNNING CLEAR THROUGH THE FINISH LINE”
The AFL-CIO has been engaged in a massive voter turnout effort that will continue until every ballot has been counted.
“With our largest union voter mobilization in history, we’ve spent every moment over the last few months reaching union households with facts on how Kamala Harris will champion working people’s priorities while Donald Trump will dismantle unions, weaken the middle class and give even more power to the wealthiest few,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.
Among other mobilization programs, the AFL-CIO has:
— engaged 7.1 million union voters through direct person-to-person contact;
— reached 3 million of those voters through digital ads;
— sent 2.5 million pieces of mail to union households; and
— sent nearly 700,000 personalized letters from local union leaders to swing union voters.
“This election, the AFL-CIO is running clear through the finish line—because union members’ jobs, contracts and freedoms are on the line,” Shuler says.
Affiliated unions are engaging in their own efforts, in some cases deploying tens of thousands of their members to key states—a significant increase compared to previous elections.
The American Federation of Teachers has sent hundreds of its members to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to canvass.
The UAW has deployed members to fellow members’ homes and worksites.
Members of the Painters and Allied Trades have been knocking on doors in every corner of Philadelphia since July.
And these efforts are just the tip of the iceberg for the massive get-out-the-vote effort being conducted by the AFL-CIO, affiliates, state and local organizations, and other unions, Shuler said.
She restated the federation’s commitment to making sure every vote in the election is counted, saying, “The AFL-CIO is committed to ensuring the same equality and representation for every voter in this country.”
“When the polls close,” she added, “the AFL-CIO is committed to protecting the sanctity of our electoral process and ensuring that every vote is counted and every ballot [is] collected.”
“Because this will be a historically close election and states follow rigorous procedures to certify their results, that process will take time.”
“We may not know the winner of the election for days or longer.”
“But what’s important is not getting this done fast—it’s getting this done right.”
“What matters isn’t what’s announced on election night.”
“What matters is that the winner chosen by the American people, in accordance with the rule of law, takes the oath of office next January in a peaceful transfer of power.”
MM&P is one of the 60 AFL-CIO affiliates, which together represent more than 12.5 million working Americans.
GLOBAL SEAFARER, A PUBLICATION OF THE NAUTILUS FEDERATION, IS NOW ONLINE
The new issue of Global Seafarer, the quarterly publication of the Nautilus Federation, has been posted on the MM&P website.
In this issue of Global Seafarer:
— Mark Dickinson, director of the Nautilus Federation, calls on shipping companies to protect mariners by diverting ships from dangerous Red Sea routes;
— MM&P and other American maritime unions urge Congress to reject attempts to weaken protections against sexual assault and harassment that were included in legislation passed in 2022;
— Nautilus Federation unions call on NATO member states to confront “the alarming decline” in the number of qualified merchant seafarers and national-flag merchant vessels;
— Norway’s report on near-grounding of a cruise ship in 2019 found the engineers had not been adequately trained on how to deal with a blackout and loss of propulsion;
— the ITF operates an online index of companies that deny seafarers their basic human and union rights—you can report companies that violate mariners’ rights to the ITF or to Nautilus.
MM&P is one of the 22 maritime unions that belong to the Nautilus Federation and one of the nearly 700 transport unions in 147 countries that belong to the ITF.

REP. DEBBIE DINGELL NAMED GREAT LAKES LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR
The Great Lakes Maritime Task Force has named Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) its Legislator of the Year in recognition of her advocacy for the Great Lakes and the men and women who keep the regional economy running.
“The Great Lakes support communities across our region and across our country,” Dingell said.
“They create more than 1.5 million jobs and generate $62 billion in wages every year.”
“I’m honored to be recognized by the Great Lakes Maritime Task Force and I will continue to fight in Congress to protect these waters and all who depend on them.”
Dingell is a staunch supporter of the Jones Act, which requires that cargo moving between two US points be carried on vessels that are crewed, built, and owned by American citizens.
She has also worked in Congress to generate the funds needed to finish the new large navigational lock in Sault Ste Marie and pressed for the acquisition of a desperately needed Coast Guard heavy icebreaker, said Jim Weakley, vice president of the Great Lakes Maritime Task Force.
MM&P is one of the nearly 80 members of The Great Lakes Maritime Task Force, the largest coalition advocating for the Great Lakes Navigation System.
Its members represent labor and management at U.S.-flag vessel operators, shipboard and longshore unions, port authorities, cargo shippers, terminal operators, and shipyards.
FOUR STOWAWAYS FOUND ON RUDDER OF MSC CONTAINERSHIP
Authorities in the Canary Islands have reported the discovery of four stowaways who had traveled about 2,000 nautical miles on the rudder of a Mediterranean Shipping Company containership, MSC FIAMETTA.
According to media reports, the four said they were Nigerian citizens and had climbed onto the rudder while the vessel was berthed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
They were discovered by port workers on Oct. 26.
Tracking data indicates that before arriving in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the ship had been at sea for six days and traveled approximately 2,000 nautical miles.
The authorities said the four appeared to be in good health and had been taken ashore for processing.
The incident is similar to others reported last year, including one in July 2023 in which two men were found aboard the rudder of the MSC MARTA when it arrived in the Canary Islands from West Africa.
Under Spanish law, in most cases stowaways are placed back on the ship they arrived on, which is responsible for returning them to the port at which they embarked.
In some cases, such as those of three Nigerian stowaways who arrived in November of last year on the oil tanker ALITHINI II, Spain grants asylum on humanitarian grounds.

MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME ACADEMY WELCOMES NEW TRAINING SHIP
The Maritime Administration has officially transferred ownership of TS PATRIOT STATE to Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
The new training ship is the second of the National Security Multi-Mission Vessels destined for the country’s maritime academies.
SUNY Maritime accepted delivery of the first, TS EMPIRE STATE VII, in September 2023.
The NSMVs are designed to serve a dual purpose: supporting merchant mariner education and assisting with humanitarian/disaster relief during times of national emergency.
“Make no mistake about it, the NSMV program is the envy of the maritime world,” said Rear Adm. Francis X. McDonald, president of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
“These amazing vessels will train the next generation of mariners, and the next generation or two after that.”
The new training ships have numerous instructional spaces and a full training bridge.
They can accommodate up to 600 cadets, providing a first-rate maritime academic environment at sea.
During a humanitarian crisis, they can accommodate up to 1,000 people.
They feature modern hospital facilities, a helicopter pad and extensive roll-on/roll-off and container storage capacity.
They measure 159.85 meters in length, have a breadth of 27.00 meters, and can reach speeds of 18 knots.
The new ships are being constructed at Philly Shipyard. The next to be constructed is destined for Maine Maritime Academy.
After that it will be the turn of Texas A&M Maritime Academy and California Maritime Academy, in that order.
REC NEW YORK CLOSED NOV. 13-22
REC New York will be closed for construction on Nov. 13 and is expected to remain closed until Nov. 22.
