MM&P ENDORSES VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS FOR PRESIDENTT

Delegates to the 90th MM&P Convention have voted to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for President of the United States.

The Delegates had voted unanimously on June 27, the last day of the Convention, to endorse President Biden, a staunch supporter of the U.S.-flag fleet and the American labor movement.

Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the race on July 21.

“Although much has changed in the Presidential race, the stakes have not,” MM&P President Don Marcus says.

“President Trump did nothing meaningful for the U.S. Merchant Marine while in office, and he did his level best to cripple labor by his appointments to the Courts, the National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Labor.”

In his letter to Convention Delegates, Marcus also cited a passage in Project 2025, which was compiled by Trump allies in anticipation of his becoming President again, pledging to “unleash American potential by unilaterally enacting Jones Act exemptions wherever allowed, as currently happens most years during hurricane season, and working with Congress to repeal the Jones Act.” (See: Project 2025, p. 809).

On the contrary, Marcus noted, Vice President Harris has pledged her full support for maritime labor, collective bargaining, and the right to join and form unions.

During her short time in the Senate before becoming Vice President, she was a strong Jones Act advocate who consistently showed her support for full Maritime Security Program appropriations.

“From day one, Vice President Kamala Harris has been a true partner in leading the most pro-labor administration in history,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler in announcing the federation’s unanimous endorsement.

“At every step in her distinguished career in public office, she’s proven herself a principled and tenacious fighter for working people and a visionary leader we can count on.”

CREW OF STATEN ISLAND FERRY NEWHOUSE RESPONDS TO MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Crewmembers aboard the Staten Island Ferry NEWHOUSE responded to a medical emergency during the evening rush hour on Aug. 2.

Members of the 3C crew, including deckhands and ABs, performed CPR for an unspecified period of time, possibly as long as 15 minutes.

“The crew was flawless in their attempt to save the passenger with CPR and an AED,” said MM&P Atlantic Maritime Group City Representative Anthony Turzio.

“Our crews are extremely well trained and professional. They never hesitate to assist in any type of emergency.”

“Bravo Zulu to the 3C crew for a job well done.”

NAVY CHRISTENS USNS POINT LOMA

USNS POINT LOMA, the second of the Navy’s Flight II expeditionary fast transport vessels, was christened on Saturday at Austal USA Shipyard in Mobile, Ala.

EPFs are high-speed transport ships capable of operating in shallow waterways. Flight II EPFs have added medical mission afloat capabilities.

The Navy accepted delivery of the first Flight II EPF, USNS CODY, in January.

Medical personnel deployed aboard Flight II EPFs can provide basic secondary health care around primary surgery, along with limited x-ray, lab, and dental support.

They have ward beds as well as an intensive care unit, and can support two operating rooms, approximately 41 patients, and 147 embarked forces.

The Navy says the catamaran design provides inherent stability to allow surgeons to perform medical procedures in the on-board operating suite while underway.

EPFs can transport approximately 419 short tons and travel 1,200 nautical miles at an average speed of 33 knots.

They have a flight deck to support day and night aircraft launch and recovery operations and can load heavy equipment and vehicles.

The EPFs are crewed by civilian mariners, including licensed deck officers represented by the MM&P Federal Employees Membership Group.

USNS POINT LOMA is named after the San Diego seaside community with a long-standing naval presence.

Point Loma, bordered by the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay and the San Diego River, is home to Naval Base Point Loma, which provides support to 70 U.S. Pacific Fleet afloat and shore-based commands.

GAP BETWEEN CEO SALARIES AND WORKERS’ WAGES CONTINUES TO GROW

CEO pay at S&P 500 companies increased by 6 percent in 2023, to an average of $17.7 million annually in total compensation.

That means that the median employee of an S&P 500 company would have had to start working in 1755, twenty years before the start of the American Revolution, to earn what the average CEO took home in 2023.

The finding is reported in this year’s AFL-CIO Executive Paywatch, which charts the widening gap between CEO salaries and workers’ wages.

“Our economy works best when corporations act responsibly toward their employees, their customers, the environment and local communities,” the labor federation said in a statement.

“But too many corporate CEOs choose management strategies for short-term gains that undermine their companies, their workers and our communities in the long term.”

“Workers are coming together to advocate for better working conditions, including family-sustaining wages and benefits, and it’s paying off.”

“But sadly, ultra-rich CEOs will continue to pay themselves exorbitant wages without transparency.”

“That’s why we need your help to spread the word about the problem of runaway CEO compensation.”

Read this year’s report and spread the word.

MM&P is one of the 60 AFL-CIO affiliates. Together, they represent more than 12.5 million working Americans.

NEW E-MAIL SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS FOR MMC AND MMC-RELATED DOCUMENTS

The National Maritime Center has established a centralized e-mail inbox for the submission of certain merchant mariner credential applications to streamline the MMC application submission process and better manage the receipt and initial processing of incoming MMC applications.

Regional exam centers will continue to receive and process MMC applications for Local Limited, Restricted, and First Class Pilot MMCs.

Please continue to e-mail, mail, or hand-deliver these applications to the local REC responsible for the routes requested. E-mail is the preferred method of submission for these applications.

The e-mail and physical address of each of the RECs is posted on the NMC’s Regional Exam Centers webpage.

Please note that sending First Class Pilot/Local Limited applications directly to the NMC may result in delays in processing your application.

The NMC is centralizing the submission of all other MMC applications. The preferred method of application submission is e-mail.

If you are applying for anything other than a Local Limited, Restricted, or First Class Pilot credential, please e-mail your application to MMCApplications@uscg.mil.

Processing times at the NMC vary based on e-mail volume.

Sending information via e-mail to the incorrect e-mail address or sending the same information to several e-mail addresses will significantly delay the processing of your information and cause delays in processing for other mariners.

MMC and medical certificate applications and information are processed separately and should not be sent to the same e-mail address.

For more detailed guidelines on submitting medical certificate applications and information, visit the NMC’s Medical Certificate webpage.

You can help us improve our processing times by sending MMC applications as indicated above AND by adhering to the guidelines below when sending any other information electronically:

1. Subject lines for MMC-related e-mails should include: the mariner’s last name, mariner’s first name, and mariner’s reference number (if available).

2. Attachments should be in the form of PDFs that are named as follows: Mariner Last Name_Mariner First Name_ Mariner Reference Number (if available). For example: Smith_John_1234567.

3. Only submit documentation in PDF format attached to the e-mail. Other formats (including links to PDFs) will not be accepted, and your application and/or documentation will not be returned.

4. Drug test results are part of your MMC application and should NOT be sent with your Medical application (CG 719K or K/E).

5. E-mail documentation/information in response to an awaiting information letter related to an MMC application to: MMC-Awaiting-Info@uscg.mil.

6. E-mail general questions and requests for status updates to: IASKNMC@uscg.mil.

Do not send the same documentation and/or information to more than one e-mail address.

7. Send all required documentation with your application. Mariners who do not have an active MMC application in process at the NMC or a REC should hold all documentation until they submit their next MMC application.

Documents received without an open MMC application are not processed and will not be returned.

RECs accept in-person delivery of applications with an appointment.

But the NMC West Virginia does not accept walk-ins or in-person delivery of applications.

If you have any questions, please contact the NMC Customer Service Center by using the NMC online chat system, by e-mailing IASKNMC@uscg.mil, or by calling 1-888-IASKNMC (427-5662).

5 TIPS FOR FINDING A THERAPIST WHO FITS: A GUIDE FOR MM&P MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Whether you are new to the union or close to retirement, life in our industry can be unpredictable and stressful.

Here are 5 tips for finding the right therapist: one who fits your lifestyle and can help navigate to mental well-being.

#1. Seek a Therapist Who Understands Maritime Life

Maritime life is not just a job; it’s a unique lifestyle. From long stints away from family to the stress of unpredictable weather, your therapist should understand what it is that we do.

Why It Matters: Finding a therapist who “gets” maritime life means they can offer relevant advice and understand its challenges without needing a nautical dictionary.

#2. Be Open to In-Person or Remote Therapy

Being underway means you need flexibility in your therapy options. Remote therapy—through video calls, phone calls, or even text—can be a lifesaver when you are at sea.

Why It Matters: The beauty of remote therapy is that you do not have to take a break from counseling when you are sailing. You can have a session from the comfort of your cabin, whether you are anchored off Saipan or navigating the Southern Ocean.

Plus, remote therapy means you do not have to wait until you are back on land to get the support you need, and you can be consistent with weekly, biweekly, or monthly meetings.

#3. Look for Union Benefits and Insurance Coverage

Benefits are one of the great perks of union membership. MM&P offers mental health support as part of our benefits. You have three options that are covered:

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) now offers 6 free, confidential counseling sessions—either Individual or Couples/Family—through TELUS.

Go to the TELUS website or download the TELUS ONE app and make an appointment easily online.

Enter the username: MMP

Enter the password: 5100

In the purple box on the top left-hand side of the page, click “Schedule an appointment.”

There is also a https://mastersmatespilotsplan.lifeworks.com/life/employee-assistance.

Cigna health insurance covers Cigna mental health providers in-network.

There is a video tutorial on bridgedeck.org that can help you find a provider in your state.

If you find a therapist who is a good fit but is not in-network, find out about benefits by calling an MM&P Health & Benefit Plan advisor at: 410-850-8500.

Ask your therapist for a bill and submit the claim to the Plan.

Why It Matters: Therapy can be expensive, and your union benefits can help cover the cost. This makes therapy more accessible and reduces the financial burden, allowing you to focus on your mental health without worrying about the bill.

#4. Find a Therapist Who Offers a Trial Session

Just like test-driving a new car, you want to ensure your therapist is the right fit before you commit.

Most therapists offer a free or discounted initial session, giving you the chance to see if their style and approach align with your needs.

Why It Matters: The therapeutic relationship is crucial; you want to find someone you trust and feel comfortable with. A trial session is a no-pressure way to see if there is a good connection.

#5. Check Their Credentials and Reviews

It might seem obvious, but make sure your therapist is properly credentialed and comes highly recommended. Check online reviews and ask friends—especially those in similar professions—for referrals.

Why It Matters: Credentials ensure that your therapist has the necessary training and knowledge to help you effectively.

Bonus Tip: Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, trust your instincts. You know yourself better than anyone else. If something does not feel right, it probably isn’t. Your therapist should help you feel supported and heard.

Why It Matters: Therapy is a deeply personal journey. Trusting your gut ensures that you are on the right course.

If you have questions about the MM&P Mental Health Resources Committee or related topics, please send an email to manthony@bridgedeck.org.
