MATSON BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF NEXT-GEN LNG-POWERED SHIPS
Matson has begun construction of the first of three new LNG-powered vessels that will join its fleet in 2027 and 2028.
The official start of hull assembly began on Aug. 4, when a 420-metric ton section of the MAKUA’s engine room was lowered into the dry dock at Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
The second and third vessels will be the MALAMA and the MAKENA.
All three newbuilds will be delivered ready to operate on liquefied natural gas and with double-hulled fuel tanks and freshwater ballast systems.
“These new ships are just the latest Jones Act vessels Matson has built with Philly Shipyard over the past 22 years, supporting 1,500 jobs for skilled American workers and providing additional opportunities for American mariners,” Matson Chairman and CEO Matt Cox said in a statement.
“They will expand Matson’s Jones Act fleet and enhance our service capabilities in the Asia-US trade lane while providing additional capacity and speed benefitting customers of our Hawaii and Guam services.”
The 854-foot Aloha Class ships will each have a carrying capacity of 3,600 TEU and are designed to operate at speeds exceeding 23 knots.
They will replace three vessels currently deployed in Matson’s Hawaii, Guam, and CLX services.
Philly Shipyard previously built Matson’s first two Aloha Class ships, delivered in 2018 and 2019, the DANIEL K. INOUYE and the KAIMANA HILA, which were converted to LNG-fueled operations in 2023 and 2024.
MM&P licensed deck officers crew all the ships in the Matson fleet.

HOUTHI REBELS ISSUE NEW THREATS AGAINST INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
The Houthis have made new threats against global shipping companies, prohibiting their ships from transiting the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea, and warning that their vessels will be attacked “wherever they fall within reach.”
Last month, the Houthis sank two Greek-owned bulk carriers, the MAGIC SEAS and the ETERNITY C.
The crew of the MAGIC SEAS was safely evacuated before the vessel sank.
Four members of the crew of the ETERNITY C died and another 11 are believed to have been kidnapped by the Houthis.
The targets of the most recent threats are 64 shipping companies which the Houthis have accused—without revealing their names—of having business relationships with Israel.
The recent warnings have led the international Combined Maritime Task Force to classify the threat level to Israel-linked shipping as “critical” and the overall risk to shipping as “severe.”
A joint statement from the International Chamber of Shipping, BIMCO, INTERTANKO, INTERCARGO, and the European Community of Shipowner Associations urges global stakeholders to protect seafarers and uphold the freedom of navigation.
Arsenio Dominguez, the secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization, says the new threats underline the need for urgent multilateral action to ensure maritime security.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have attacked dozens of merchant ships in the Red Sea, actions that the NGO Human Rights Watch has deemed war crimes.

PIRACY SURGED IN ASIAN WATERS IN FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 2025
Incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships increased by 83 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.
A total of 95 incidents were reported from January to June, up from 52 in 2024, including 93 armed robberies and two pirate attacks.
The news was released by RECAAP Information Sharing Center, a multilateral agreement between 16 countries in Asia that facilitates the sharing of piracy-related information.
Eighty-four percent of all cases of robbery in Asian waters were low-level thefts, often in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
Nearly all targeted slow-moving bulkers in the Singapore Strait’s eastbound lane.
In half the cases, items like engine parts and ship stores were stolen; in the other half, the perpetrators fled empty-handed.
Incidents declined in the waters of Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines, but increased slightly in the waters of India and Vietnam.
Given the overall rise in reported incidents, RECAAP is urging littoral states to increase their patrols.

SINGAPORE-FLAG MAERSK SHIP AND LIBERIA-FLAG CAR CARRIER COLLIDE IN DANISH STRAITS
The containership MAERSK GIRONDE and the car carrier SFL COMPOSER collided on the night of Aug. 5 while transiting the Danish Straits.
The collision took place shortly before midnight local time in the deep-water channel off Funen Island, a busy shipping lane feeding into the Baltic.
There were no injuries to crewmembers or reports of pollution, but both ships sustained “material damage” above the waterline, according to the Danish Maritime Authority.
Photos published by Danish media outlets showed a large scrape along the side of the car carrier starting about three-quarters of the way back along its 200-meter length, along with a large dent and a hole at the stern.
MAERSK GIRONDE, which was sailing from Wilhelmshaven, Germany, to Gdansk, Poland, sustained damage to its bow.
The SFL COMPOSER is operating under charter to Volkswagen.
Photos show it being assisted by two Svitzer tugs, with reports that it was being moved to the Port of Odense.
The Danish Maritime Authority did not comment on the circumstances of the accident or weather conditions but said both vessels were detained for inspection as part of the investigation.

CHINESE MILITARY VESSELS COLLIDE IN ATTEMPT TO HARASS PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD SHIP
A Chinese Coast Guard vessel was severely damaged in a collision with a Chinese People’s Liberation Army vessel yesterday as the two were attempting to harass two Philippine Coast Guard vessels and a supply ship traveling to the disputed area around Scarborough Shoal.
The incident happened around 0800 local time as the Philippine Coast Guard vessels TERESA MAGBANUA and SULUAN, along with the supply ship PAMAMALAKAYA, were taking fuel, ice, and other supplies to 35 Filipino fishing vessels.
The Philippine Coast Guard can be heard in the video offering medical and man overboard assistance to the crew of the heavily damaged Chinese Coast Guard vessel.
China has not acknowledged that the accident took place.
The Philippine Department of National Defense issued a statement calling the Chinese actions “atrocious and inane behavior.”
