MORE THAN HALF OF AMERICAN MARINERS INTEND TO LEAVE THEIR JOBS IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS
More than half of American mariners responding to a new survey say they plan to leave their jobs in the next five years.
This is one finding of an international study based on responses from 4,372 mariners, including 500 Americans, sailing in a range of billets aboard different types of commercial vessels.
The study was conducted by World Maritime University with support from the Officers’ Union of International Seamen (OUIS), of which MM&P and MEBA are members.
Respondents to the anonymous survey represented 99 nationalities.
The three largest groups were from India (25.1 percent), the Philippines (15.8 percent) and the US (11.5 percent).
US seafarers reported the longest workweeks—79 hours.
Additionally, 94.8 percent of American seafarers reported not having a weekly day off, and 87.6 of them stated that they had not had a full day off during their entire contract period.
“While US seafarers benefit from shorter contracts, this advantage is hampered by excessive workloads, demanding administrative burdens, extended work hours, high work stress, and severely limited shore leave,” the researchers said.
“The combined effects of inspection pressure, administrative burden, and challenging communication with companies dangerously elevate unsustainable stress levels among seafarers, particularly US seafarers.”
“Without serious, immediate consideration for seafarers’ welfare, the shipping industry as a whole, and the US maritime sector in particular, may face a recruitment crisis and the loss of vital operational know-how.”
Based on the survey results, nearly half of seafarers globally report they intend to quit within the next five years.
US seafarers had the lowest intention to stay (40.2 percent), followed by Filipino and Indian seafarers.
“From the numerous statements by working seafarers it becomes evident that a major change is required if the industry is to not only retain those experienced seafarers… but also to recruit the next generation,” said OUIS Executive Director Nick Bramley.
“MM&P officers participated in this study to shine a light on the realities of modern shipboard life,” said MM&P Atlantic Ports Vice President Tom Larkin.
“These findings make it clear that fatigue, stress, and work-life imbalance are not just quality-of-life issues—they are safety issues.
“Addressing them is essential to protecting mariners, vessels, and the integrity of the US maritime industry.”
The survey was conducted by Captain Bikram S. Bhatia, a WMU professor, Captain Raphael Baumler and WMU Professor Maria Carrera-Arce.
The entire study is posted on the MM&P website, bridgedeck.org, under News and Announcements.

HOUSE–SENATE CONFEREES AGREE TO FUND MSP AT LEVEL ADVOCATED BY US-FLAG FLEET
The House–Senate conferees on the fiscal year 2026 Transportation Appropriations legislation have agreed to $390 million for the Maritime Security Program, providing each MSP vessel with a $6.5 million stipend.
This is the amount that the maritime labor unions and US-flag shipping companies have been urging Congress to approve.
The Maritime Security Program helps ensure that US-flagged, US-crewed vessels are available for military and humanitarian needs.
The program also supports national security and the commercial shipping industry, making it a bipartisan funding priority.
There are 60 privately owned, militarily useful, commercially viable US-flag vessels in the Maritime Security Program.

CMA CGM TO RESUME ROUTING SHIPS VIA CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Shipping giant CMA CGM said last week it had decided for now against returning to the Suez-Red Sea corridor, a change from the plans it announced earlier this month.
In a brief statement, it informed customers that it would resume rerouting vessels via the Cape of Good Hope, referencing the “complex and uncertain international context” and saying it would continue to monitor the situation.
The change in plans by the French shipping giant came as the industry was taking steps toward restoring routes through the Suez-Red Sea corridor.
Carriers including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd suspended transits two years ago because their vessels had been targeted by the Houthis.
CMA CGM had maintained a limited number of transits, using warship escorts, throughout the conflict in the region.
As reported by Maritime Executive, the Houthis made a new threat just as shipping companies were beginning to commit to sending their vessels through the Suez Canal.
A Houthi spokesman warned on Jan. 15 that “Israeli and Zionist positions” on land represent a threat to Houthi oversight of the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandeb Straits, adding that any Israeli presence in the Horn of Africa is “a military target.”
Earlier this month, the crew of MAERSK DENVER safely and successfully made the first US-flag transit of the straits in over two years, following an earlier transit by the Singapore-flagged MAERSK SEBAROK.
Maersk has announced that it is restoring its US and India route, which traverses the Suez–Red Sea corridor, while it continues to closely monitor the security situation in the region.
The last reported Houthi attack against an international merchant ship took place on Sept. 29, when the Dutch-flag general cargo vessel MV MINERVAGRACHT was struck by an explosive device, an attack that killed one member of the crew and injured several others.

SOO LOCKS CLOSE FOR SEASONAL MAINTENANCE
The Great Lakes navigation season came to an end on Jan. 15, when the Soo Locks closed for seasonal maintenance.
The navigation system is scheduled to return to service on March 25, following an intensive period of critical maintenance and repairs.
Throughout the shutdown, crews will focus on infrastructure work at the MacArthur and Poe Locks.
The Great Lakes operating season is established by federal regulation based on the feasibility of moving vessels during typical ice conditions.
The US Army Corps of Engineers uses the non-navigation period to maintain the system.
The Soo project team works long hours in extreme conditions during the annual closure period.
The work they perform is unique, especially given the harsh northern Michigan winter conditions.
This season, temporary panel bridges will be installed across each lock, allowing heavy equipment, materials, and personnel to move between work areas.
Maintenance at the MacArthur Lock will include the fabrication and replacement of spring boxes and lever arms for Gates 3, 4, and 5.
The Poe Lock will undergo an underfloor cleanout, manhole inspections, and a comprehensive five-year condition assessment.
Planned repairs include work on Gate 1, installation of a lifting lug on Gate 4, repairs to Gate 3 jacking pedestals, and testing of specialized wall coatings designed to mitigate ice-related damage.
Across both locks, maintenance crews will carry out additional projects that range from the replacement of pier fender timbers to inspection of electrical and mechanical systems.
The Soo Project team is well versed in planning and executing complex maintenance and repairs.
The cold weather and physical site constraints add an intensity that requires strategic logistical planning and controls to ensure safety.
More than 4,500 vessels travel through the locks each year, carrying up to 80 million tons of cargo.
Among the most frequently carried commodities are iron ore, coal, wheat and limestone.

US WITHDRAWS FROM 66 INTERNATIONAL GROUPS
The administration has withdrawn the United States from 66 international entities, including the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combatting Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), which tracks and reports on pirate activity in the Strait of Malacca and the Sulu Sea.
Among the other organizations from which the US has withdrawn are:
— the UN Conference on Trade and Development, which funds research on maritime transport;
— UN Oceans, a coordinating body within the UN for ocean and seabed policy; and
— the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which classifies endangered species above and below water.
The administration also withdrew from several security and governance organizations, including the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, and a variety of UN human rights groups.
In a statement, the administration cited several reasons for all 66 withdrawals, including misalignment with US climate policy; ideological concerns; and questions of cost-effectiveness.

MAKE SURE YOUR RENEWED OR UPGRADED MMC LISTS ALL YOUR ENDORSEMENTS
Mariners who are renewing or upgrading their merchant mariner credentials should use the blanket statement “Renew and maintain all licenses and endorsements” in the Description of Endorsements box under Section II of the Coast Guard’s 719B form.
It is also very important that upon receiving their renewed or upgraded credential, the mariner takes the time to review it for any missing items or unexpected changes.
These types of errors are not uncommon, but the Coast Guard will correct them quickly when they are noted and reported by the mariner.

CAPTAIN PHILLIP BRADY OF THE ST. ANDREW BAY PILOTS DIES IN FALL
Captain Phillip Brady, 46, passed away earlier this month after a pilot ladder accident in Panama City, Fla.
The St. Andrew Bay Pilots Association said he fell 15 feet into the water while transferring off an outbound Singapore-flag bulk carrier.
The pilot boat operator recovered him from the water within two minutes and initiated emergency care.
He was transferred to a medical center by a Coast Guard crew but succumbed to his injuries.
Brady graduated from Kings Point in 2001, joined the MM&P Offshore Membership Group and had been a Florida pilot in Panama City for the last six years.
“Captain Brady was a respected and dedicated professional mariner whose loss is felt profoundly throughout the maritime community,” the association said in a statement.
“He is survived by his fiancée and two young children. We ask the public to keep Captain Brady’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
The accident is under investigation, and the association said that the circumstances of his passing are not yet fully known.
They have requested patience while the inquiry continues.
Captain Brady’s family has established a Go Fund Me campaign in his name.
