- IMO Should Review “Nature and Cumulative Number” of Bridge Alerts
- More than a third of ships’ officers responding to a recent survey on bridge alerts said the number and nature of bridge alerts can make it more difficult for the bridge team to identify or respond to an important alert.
- This is a key finding of a survey conducted this month by the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations.
- The principal finding is that the cumulative burden of multiple alerts can reduce their value, particularly when numerous notifications are generated in quick succession during busy navigational situations.
- The survey also found that the distinction between a critical alert and an informational or low-priority notification is important.
