MM&P MOURNS THE LOSS OF A GREAT LEADER

August 6th 2021

It is with tremendous sadness that I must report to our membership that AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, a true friend to MM&P and a giant of the American labor movement, passed away today after suffering a heart attack.‎

He was a third-generation coal miner who rose to become President of the United Mine Workers of America and then President of the AFL-CIO.
He was an advocate for working families, a fighter for justice, and an eloquent and inspirational voice for human rights and labor rights during a time of great stress for the American labor movement and for our country as a whole.

Richard Trumka was a man of action and a true believer in the finest traditions of all that is right and good in the labor movement. His loss is devastating. His incisive and passionate voice was a blessing and will not be replaced.

MM&P in particular owes Richard Trumka a great debt of gratitude for the unqualified support he gave to our union during our efforts to achieve justice within the Federation.
By recognizing MM&P’s AFL and then AFL-CIO charter that extended back to 1916, ‎he gave an enduring gift to each and every member of Masters, Mates & Pilots.

Richard may you rest in peace, your day of work is done.
