Covid-19 Safety Requirements in the Maritime Transportation System

February 9th 2021

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an order, “Requirement for Persons to Wear Masks While on Transportation Hubs,” which requires all persons travelling on all commercial vessels to wear a mask.

The CDC order applies beyond public vessels: the only exemption is for private conveyances operated solely for personal, non-commercial use.

In keeping with these orders, the US Coast Guard issued a new Marine Information Safety Bulletin (MSIB 02-21) concerning Covid-19 safety requirements on all public maritime vessels, including ferries.
