A MESSAGE FROM MM&P INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT TIMOTHY BROWN

MMP HURRICANE KATRINA UPDATE

The following is an important message from MM&P International President Capt. Tim Brown regarding MM&P’s relief efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina.

HURRICANE FUND ESTABLISHED

The MMP is currently establishing a relief fund for members and applicants needing assistance following Hurricane Katrina. This fund is named “MMP Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund” and will be accepting contributions as soon as the State of Maryland approves our filing. Once this occurs, a letter will be sent out with a self-return envelope soliciting donations for this fund. This fund is being established as an entity that can accept contributions that are tax-deductible for federal tax purposes and may be tax-deductible on state returns.

The Masters, Mates and Pilots will provide $25,000 from the general treasury to kick off the financing of this fund.

Once this fund is approved, the MMP will consider requests from victims of Hurricane Katrina. All requests must be made in writing and sent to MMP Headquarters, 700 Maritime Blvd. Linthicum, MD 21090 in care of John Gorman, Comptroller or Beverly Gutmann, Asst. Comptroller. Please do not make requests in outports. We do not want to be collecting requests for 10 or 11 offices. Surely something will be lost in the transmission or logistics.

HOUSING SITUATION

A number of individuals have called in offering temporary housing for those displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Glen Paine has offered temporary lodging at MITAGS for those displaced. Pat Ausband, from Sailors Snug Harbor, has also offered temporary housing at Snug Harbor in Sea Level, North Carolina or help from the Snug Harbor OutReach program. Please contact International Headquarters if we can be of assistance here. The best phone number is 410-850-8700 extension 11.

OTHER ASSISTANCE

Independent Fiduciary Services, our investment advisor for Plans Assets, has offered assistance to our members also.

SUE BOURCQ

The International is very pleased to report that Sue Bourcq, the MMP representative for the New Orleans area, is safe and well after spending a couple of nights living in her car in the parking lot of a Baton Rouge Hotel where she was able to use the facilities. Her house did not fair well in the Hurricane and she is currently looking after the house and getting what belongings she may need for the next few months.

It is the intention of the International to temporarily relocate Sue to International Headquarters to monitor and interact with Hurricane victims in the New Orleans area. In this way, she will be able to help members keep in touch with relatives, see how much aid they may need, and attend to other items which the MMP can offer to those facing economic chaos as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
