JULY 5 MARKS 67TH ANNIVERSARY OF BLOODY THURSDAY

Thursday, July 5, marked the 67th anniversary of Bloody Thursday, where two strikers were killed and many others injured during San Francisco’s general strike of 1934.

The strike, which originally began on May 9, 1934, tumbled out of control when the Industrial Association, made up of employers and business interests who wished to break the strike and the power of the San Francisco unions, began to move goods from the piers to warehouses.

The first running battles between unionists and police began Thursday, July 3, 1934. There was a lull during the July 4 holiday when no freight was moved, but major disturbances picked up again Thursday, July 5, which is now known as Bloody Thursday throughout the House of Labor.

Harry Bridges was a leader of the 1934 strike and became the first president of the ILWU. He was renowned for his toughness, honesty and his visionary outlook, which lead the labor movement in achieving such things as disability, medical and dental care and union controlled hiring.

A weeklong celebration July 23-29 in the LA Harbor area will mark the 100th birthday of this legendary labor leader. A highlight of the week will be a parade over the Vincent Thomas Bridge on July 28. The route begins on Terminal Island and ends in San Pedro.

Events leading up to the parade and party will include a historical exhibit at the LA Maritime Museum, a LA Harbor Art Walk, a play and award presentation at the Warner Grand Theatre about the life of Harry Bridges, boat tours and history walks. On Sunday, July 29, guests can take a one-day cruise aboard the LANE VICTORY. The weeklong celebration is co-sponsored by the ILWU and the Harry Bridges Institute. For more info, contact the Institute at 310-831-2397.

UPDATE: UP-TO-DATE WORKERS RATIFY FIRST-EVER CONTRACT

Nearly 200 Up-to-Date Laundry workers in Baltimore overwhelmingly ratified their first-ever union contract June 21, ending a 10-week strike that began after the company refused to recognize the workers’ right to unionize.

As previously reported in the Wheelhouse Weekly, on May 16, MM&P HQ staff joined with several hundred protesters from many different unions at a rally in support of the Up-to-Date workers.

The company is the largest industrial laundry in the area, servicing such prominent institutions as Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and Georgetown University Medical Center.

UNIONS ONCE AGAIN TAKE AIM AT DERAILING FAST TRACK

A broad national coalition of more than 40 unions and community, civil rights, women’s and environmental groups has launched an attack on the latest Fast Track trade bill.

The legislation is particularly onerous because it not only would forbid Congress from amending trade agreements, but also would ban workers’ rights and environmental protections from being included in any trade agreement considered under the high-speed trade negotiating authority.

This Fast Track ignores the failures of current trade policies and “represents a giant step backward, even from the flawed Fast Track rejected by the Congress in 1997 and 1998,” AFL-CIO President Sweeney recently told the Senate Finance Committee.
