MM&P GEARED-UP TO SUPPORT MEBA AND ARA NEGOTIATIONS WITH MATSON

On Friday, December 1, the MM&P and Matson reached agreement on a five year contract spanning the period January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2005. A summary of the contract’s provisions appeared in last week’s Wheelhouse Weekly.

MM&P International President Capt. Timothy A. Brown advises all MM&P members that, “On a cautionary note, the MEBA and the ARA have not yet reached agreement with Matson and are still in negotiations. The MM&P expects to support any legal job action that either of these two unions take to obtain a contract. We expect that our membership will support our sister unions.”

Any member with questions about what action, if any, to take should contact West Coast Offshore Vice President Paul Nielsen at 310-834-7201 or Capt. Brown’s office at Headquarters, 410-850-8700 x17 or Email: president@bridgedeck.org.

WSF FERRY CREW RECEIVES USCG COMMENDATION FOR RESCUE

MM&P member Capt. Michael Chase, master of the MM&P-contracted Washington State Ferry KITSAP and its crew have received a USCG commendation in recognition of successful lifesaving rescue.

The incident occurred on November 4 when personnel aboard the KITSAP, including MM&P member Chief Mate Eric Jorgensen, monitored a USCG urgent marine information broadcast reporting that two men had been thrown into the frigid waters of Puget Sound after their boat capsized. The KITSAP, which was on its scheduled Seattle to Bremerton morning run, was in the vicinity and quickly altered course to respond.

The USCG commendation reads in part:

“Demonstrating superb seamanship and professionalism, Capt. Chase expertly maneuvered the 328-foot vessel through 25-knot winds and 4-foot seas to direct the shipboard recovery of the two men less than 15 minutes from the time the accident was first reported by a passing ship.

“The rapid response of the KITSAP’s crew almost certainly saved two lives. Their outstanding efforts are testament to the skill of Washington State Ferry personnel and are greatly appreciated. It is a comfort to the boating public, and to the USCG, to know that such skilled and willing resources ply the waters of Puget Sound. The contributions that Capt. Chase and his crew make to the safety of Puget Sound are heartily commended and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the USCG.”

NEW PRESIDENT FOR SAN FRANCISCO PILOTS

On Nov.8th, the San Francisco Bar Pilots elected Capt. Peter McIsaac to serve as Port Agent and President for a two year term. Capt. McIsaac is a Hausepiper who began his career 24 years ago
aboard tugboats on the Great Lakes. In 1994, Capt. McIsaac received his commission as a California State Pilot.

Having served on the pilot association’s Finance and Policy Committees, Capt. McIsaac has now assumed the office of President, where he plans to continue the training and operational improvements the organization has been making.

In addition to providing a safe and efficient pilotage service, Capt. McIsaac has expressed a commitment to assist the ports the San Francisco Bar Pilots serve, both operationally and in helping attract and hold customers and to work to continue to improve the pilots’ relationship with the companies they serve.

Capt. Kip Carlson continues to serve as MM&P Representative for the San Francisco Bar Pilots.

PROTESTERS MARCH AGAINST ANTI-UNION ACTIVITIES AT WORKBOAT SHOW

Over 200 protesters demonstrated last week at the Convention Center in New Orleans to protest the anti-union activities of some of the maritime companies attending the International Workboat Show there.

Members of Offshore Mariners United (OMU – a federation of five US maritime unions — including the MM&P — organizing workers in the Gulf of Mexico oilfield offshore service industry), ITF representatives, politicians and community leaders were among those who rallied to protest against the actions of some offshore marine service companies in the Gulf of Mexico oilfields. They were also there to show their support for the OMU’s drive to recruit and represent members in the oil patch maritime sector despite the intimidation and firings used by some of those companies to prevent union organizing efforts.

Addressing the rally David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary, said: “The anti-union, anti-worker practices of American companies like Edison-Chouest, Ensco, Hvide, Trico, Seacor and Tidewater represent a serious abrogation of human and worker rights. They violate not only American laws but the conventions of the International Labor Organization.” In other parts of the world, he added, Trico Marine and Tidewater have unionized workforces, but in the Gulf of Mexico have taken a vehemently anti-union stance.
