MM&P SAYS THANK YOU TO JOHN METCALFE, UNION MEMBER AND SEAFARERS’ ADVOCATE

January 4th 2017

MM&P member John Metcalfe, who served for years as an inspector for the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), received an official “thank you” from MM&P during a brief ceremony that was held at the union’s Boston Hall during the annual holiday party.

ITF inspectors check ships for problems relating to employment and living conditions, provide advice and assistance to seafarers, liaise with the Port State Control on safety matters and, when necessary, calculate owed wages and pressure shipowners to resolve the problems they uncover.

Working without any financial recompense, ITF inspectors are virtually “on call” 24/7 to assist seafarers in need.

During the ceremony, MM&P officials gave Metcalfe, a retired member of the MM&P Offshore Group, a union-made MM&P clock in recognition of his contributions over the years to seafarers’ health, safety and welfare.
